IT Business Planning techniques will play an increasingly important role in the next few years with the ongoing emphasis and demand for all types of e-services, . In the traditional IT approach, the pressure to find appropriate solutions rests often solely on the IT Managers. IT business planning is a joint exercise between the IT and Business Managers of an organization to which they should all positively contribute and for which they should all feel responsible and be held accountable.

Our methodology for developing IT Strategies and Business Plans is based on the Current/Future/Gap/Implementation or CFGI framework which consists of four tasks:

•  Identification of the current position and status – this involves careful examination of the environment to answer the question “Where are we now?” In order to satisfactorily answer that issue, it is necessary to examine the organization both internally and externally- internal review will highlight the manner in which the organization is currently seeking to achieve its goals , external examination will reveal what is possible and focus on best practice.

• Identification of where we want to be in the future – this process will be organizational responsibility led. The future responsibilities of the organization in meeting its objectives must be the main determinant of the IT direction. So, in determining where we want to be in the IT context, we first have to determine what the organization wants to do and then rationalize IT proposals accordingly.

• Identify the IT gap between where we currently are and where we would wish to be in the future.

• Identify how required enhancements to the IT systems will be implemented.
